Supporting working parents through lockdown

At a time when we find ourselves in a third national lockdown that includes the closure of primary and secondary schools, (with the exception of vulnerable students and the children of key workers), it’s vital that employers review how the current situation has left their parent employees juggling work, childcare and homeschooling.

A recent study conducted by the Trades Union Congress (TUC) has revealed that 7 in 10 requests for furlough by working mothers are rejected.

Here are some ideas for employers to support those team members who are juggling jobs, childcare responsibilities and homeschooling.

  • Consider if there are any areas in which you can offer some form of flexibility

  • Consider utilising the furlough scheme or flexible furlough scheme if eligible

  • Consider allowing a period of holiday time to be taken

  • Have regular catch ups with your team to find out what solutions might be helpful to them

  • Be patient and understanding if there are interruptions due to childcare or home schooling

  • Emphasise wellbeing and encourage people to take care of themselves

  • Support employees with prioritising tasks and measure on output rather than working time

  • Keep communicating and encourage employees to let you know if and when they require help

Following some of the above steps demonstrates a forward-thinking style of leadership, it should help you as a leader to have more engaged employees who are likely to go the extra mile for you and your business because of the willingness that you have shown to help and support them during these difficult times.
